Western Climate Initiative
The Western Climate Initiative (WCI) was created in February 2007 by the U.S. Western Governors' Association. It provides its members with a common platform for tackling climate change. Its main activities revolve around the creation and deployment of a CO2 cap-and-trade system.
The WCI currently has 4 partner-members, as follows:
- Four Canadian provinces:
- Québec
- British Columbia
- Manitoba
- Ontario
It also has 13 observer-members (American and Mexican states and Canadian provinces). Québec joined the initiative as a partner-member in April 2008.
The WCI partners are working together to set the guidelines for a future greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program. The program is eagerly awaited by stakeholders across North America and around the world. Québec's participation in the planning and eventual implementation of the program makes it a global leader in the fight against climate change.
