Electric vehicles: Québec’s expertise marketed in Asia

Clément Gignac, the Minister of Natural Resources and Wildlife and Minister responsible for the Plan Nord, has just announced the creation of a new joint venture between TM4, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, and Prestolite Electric Beijing Limited (PEBL). This joint venture will market electric drivetrain systems for buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles in Asia.

“This announcement concerns a breakthrough of huge importance. It is recognition of Québec’s know-how and expertise in electric transportation research, development and innovation. This is also a concrete example of direct economic spin-offs from the economic mission in China led by Québec’s Premier last August,” stated Minister Gignac.

Special access to the Chinese market

The joint venture, known as Prestolite E-Propulsion Systems (Beijing) Limited (PEPS), will develop, manufacture, sell and provide post-sales service for electric drivetrain systems developed in Québec. This approach provides TM4's technological innovations, which are still being developed in Boucherville, with special access to a huge Chinese market, which produces 40% of the buses used around the world.

Québec’s Action Plan for Electric Vehicles

“This project meets the objectives of the 2011-2020 Action Plan for Electric Vehicles by stimulating development of innovative products and thus contributes to the creation of a world-class industrial sector in Québec. There is no doubt that China, just like Québec, is beginning to make the change to low-carbon transportation and the expertise and know-how of Québec’s firms already stand out in electric vehicle development niches,” concluded the Minister.
