Québec was the guest of honour at the 15th edition of the Festival Cultural de Mayo (FCM). Ballets Jazz de Montréal opened the festivities to a packed house at Théâtre Degollado de Guadalajara on May 11. Minister of Culture, Communication and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, as well as Québec Delegate General in Mexico, Christiane Pelchat, attended the event.

The Minister also attended the openings of the Candide/Candido contemporary art exhibition organized by Manif d’art de Québec and Imaginando Personajes by Cirque du Soleil costume designer, Dominique Lemieux, at Hospicio Cabañas de Guadalajara.

A diverse program

Impressed by the inventiveness of Québec creators, the artistic director of the festival, Sergio Alejandro Matos, admitted that it had been difficult for him to make a choice. His program features over 200 Québec artists, who will be showcasing the quality and avant-garde nature of Québec art until May 27 in a wide range of disciplines, including music, film, dance, performing arts, visual, audio-visual and circus arts. Conferences and animation workshops are also on the program menu.

This is one of Québec’s most important participations in a cultural event in Mexico. Québec’s involvement follows in the footsteps of the bilateral cooperation agreement signed in 2009 between Québec and the State of Jalisco. Considered one of the largest festivals in Mexico, this cultural event gives “tapatios,” the people of Jalisco, an opportunity to discover the best that invited cultures and countries have to offer.

Government partners

Funding from the Government of Québec comes from various development and travel grant programs for artists and cultural organizations, which are mainly offered by CALQ, Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec, Société de développement des entreprises culturelles, Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine and Ministère des Relations internationales.
