Québec’s National Holiday celebrated in style in Munich

Charles Villiers, Québec Delegate General in Munich; Beate Merk, Bavarian Minister of Justice; Max Stocker, Director, Bavarian Radio/Bayerischer Rundfunk and winner of a Munich-Montréal round trip ticket for two; and Frank Hartung, Air Canada Sales Director for Germany.

Nearly 300 people responded to the invitation extended by the Québec Government Office in Munich to celebrate Québec’s National Holiday. The Plan Nord was the theme of this year’s festivities.

Québec Delegate General Charles Villiers took advantage of the opportunity to provide an overview of activities over recent months, focusing on the many outcomes stemming from Québec’s presence in Germany. He mentioned the Plan Nord Seminar, which took place in Munich on June 18 and attracted some 150 participants. A sizeable group of Québec companies and researchers travelled to Munich for the event. Mr. Villiers underscored the strength of relations between Québec and Germany as well as between Québec and Bavaria. In this regard, a joint declaration on the Plan Nord signed last April by Québec Premier Jean Charest and Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer is important for Québec’s partnership with this German state.

Bavarian Minister of Justice Beate Merk also addressed the guests, emphasizing the specificity of relations between Québec and Bavaria. It should be noted that Ms. Merk conducted a mission to Québec in October 2010, which enabled her to familiarize herself with topics such as cybercrime, the fight against child pornography, electronic surveillance and mega-trials.

Québec National Holiday celebrations in Munich have become a highly valued event in Munich in terms of diplomatic and institutional exchanges. Indeed, they are an ideal opportunity to bring together key players in Québec-Bavaria relations from the government, consular, economic, cultural and academic sectors, and promote direct contact among them.
