The Minister of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade, Jean-François Lisée, gave a positive assessment of his participation in the 19th Conference of Montréal, where he spoke during the Africa: A New Hub for Economic Growth forum.

At a time when Africa’s economic take-off is being widely discussed, Minister Lisée stressed the fact that such major world powers as the United States, China and the European Union are courting the continent.

In order to make headway in Africa, Québec should focus on the historic ties it has forged with several African countries, highlight that it shares the French language with them and promote the expertise of Québec companies in the fields of infrastructure, engineering, transportation, natural resource development (mining, forestry and energy), information technology, training, etc.

Minister Lisée took the opportunity afforded by the occasion to speak with a number of international political and economic leaders, including the:

  • Minister for Foreign Affairs of Gabon, Emmanuel Issoze Ngondet
  • Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurria
  • Minister of Commerce, Industry and Informal Sector of the Republic of Senegal, Alioune Sarr
  • Director of the Department of National Economy, Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Shanghai, Guo Yu.

The Minister also announced that he will take part in a mission to sub-Saharan Africa this coming fall, when he will visit Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal accompanied by a delegation of companies and institutions. This will be followed later in the year by another mission to the Maghreb.

The 19th edition of the Conference of Montréal was held from June 10 to 13, 2013. This year’s theme was A New Economic Cycle: New Realities, New Frontiers.
