The Government of Québec will provide $1.5M in funding to enable Montréal to participate in World EXPO 2010 taking place in Shanghai next year from May 1 to October 31. The EXPO theme is “Better City, Better life.” The Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, Pierre Arcand, and the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade and Minister Responsible for the Montréal Region, Raymond Bachand, made the announcement March 2 in the presence of Mayor Gérald Tremblay.

Marking a first in world expo history, an exhibition area will be devoted to best urban practices and Montréal will be a fitting representative for all of Québec at the event. The Saint Michel Environmental Complex and TOHU demonstrate a blend of the environmental, cultural and social qualities that are essential components in the development and well-being of tomorrow’s urban communities.

EXPO 2010 will afford Montréal and Québec an exceptional showcase in a world exposition setting: 180 countries have been invited to participate in the event, which is expected to attract 70 million visitors. The expo will be a unique opportunity to spotlight Québec’s know-how in sustainable development and innovative environmental technology – a key sector in China’s development. “This is also a wonderful opportunity to establish relations with the Chinese environmental industry, as we have done so successfully with the transport and aerospace industries,” said Minister Arcand.

In 2010, Montréal will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its twinning with Shanghai. The twinning has allowed Montréal, and Québec, to enjoy special ties with Shanghai, which are evidenced by the strong presence of Québec companies such as Bombardier and SNC-Lavalin in the Chinese megacity.
