On May 8, Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, took part in the signing ceremony for an agreement between Montréal International and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), under which WADA will keep its secretariat in Montréal until 2021. The document was signed on the WADA premises by John Fahey, WADA President, David Howman, WADA Director General, and André Gamache, President and CEO of Montréal International.

WADA chose Montréal for its secretariat in 2001 following a painstaking selection process. The governments of Québec and Canada agreed at the time to provide the agency with financial support over a ten-year period, from 2001 to 2011, renewable under the same terms for 2011 to 2021.

In the words of Minister Arcand, “WADA’s presence in Montréal not only contributes significantly to bolstering the international dimension of our biggest city: it allows us to reiterate the importance that we place on the fight against doping and on maintaining the best conditions for WADA to fulfill its mission in an effective way.” The Government of Québec’s policy for welcoming international organizations favours the establishment and development in Québec of international bodies like WADA.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is an independent international organization created jointly in 1999 by the Olympic Movement and governments in order to promote sports ethics and harmonize international efforts to fight doping.
