Inter-American cooperation issues in the spotlight

Minister Pierre Arcand (centre) with Nicole Lacasse, Laval University’s Assistant Vice-Rector of International Studies and Activities, and Gordon Mace, ISC Director and Professor of Political Science at Laval University.

Only a few weeks after the conclusion of the fifth Summit of the Americas, key inter-American cooperation issues are back in the spotlight at the sixth International Summer School on the Americas, which will be held at Laval University from May 10-16. Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, spoke at the opening ceremony of the summer school, which is organized by the Inter-American Studies Center (ISC) in affiliation with the Institut québécois des hautes études internationales (HEI).

Addressing an audience of mainly students and professors, Mr. Arcand paid tribute to the ISC’s efforts to train the next generation of leaders and to foster dialogue on major international issues of interest to Québec, particularly inter-American issues.

Mr. Arcand also emphasized the important place occupied by inter-American affairs in Québec’s International Policy. In this regard, the Minister noted that Québec’s Government Office in Washington has appointed a multilateral affairs officer responsible for following and participating in initiatives involving the Organization of American States. In support of these efforts, a desk has been established at the headquarters of the Ministère des Relations internationales (MRI) in Québec City.

The MRI supports the ISC’s research and publication activities under a five-year agreement with Laval University.
