The Québec film industry’s discovery of the year, J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), by Xavier Dolan, screened in Hollywood on November 3 as part of the AFI FEST 2009 official competition. The film’s American premiere was held in the mythical Chinese Theatre in the presence of actors François Arnaud and Patricia Tulasne.

I Killed My Mother was selected for the New Lights Competition section of AFI FEST, the American Film Institute’s annual film festival. It was submitted to the festival organizers by the Québec Government Office in Los Angeles, which also looked after the necessary follow-up with the programmers in order to make sure that the film was chosen for the event.

The screening marked the launch of the I Killed My Mother Oscar campaign. Dolan’s film has been chosen to represent Canada for the award for best foreign language film. Another screening was held in the theatre of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for voting members.

I Killed My Mother has won a number of awards since its May 2009 screening at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won three prizes during the Directors’ Fortnight. It has been singled out for honours at festivals in Moscow, Namur, Zagreb, Vancouver and Reykjavik. I Killed My Mother is 20-year-old Xavier Dolan’s first film.
