Haiti: Québec government grants $3 million in emergency assistance

Premier Jean Charest has announced $3 million in emergency financial assistance for the people of Haiti, hard hit by the January 12 earthquake.

The amount will be paid to the following international cooperation organizations already involved in humanitarian operations in Haiti:

  • Canadian Red Cross, Québec Zone: $1 million
  • Oxfam-Québec: $1 million
  • Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI): $500,000
  • Development and Peace: $250,000
  • Médecins du monde: $250,000

The $3 million is in addition to the efforts already devoted by the Government of Québec to help the Haitian people, by making police and medical personnel available for deployment and setting up a committee at Montréal-Trudeau Airport to welcome Canadian nationals as they arrive from Haiti.

According to Premier Charest, “Numerous Québec organizations are working in Haiti to save lives and deploy humanitarian efforts in very difficult conditions. I thank Quebecers for their generosity. Our help supports the extraordinary work of these organizations in extremely difficult conditions.”
