Profitable mission to Farnborough

Clément Gignac at Farnborough

Some 20 Québec companies, joined by Clément Gignac, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, took part in the UK’s Farnborough International Airshow, which ran from July 19-25.

The companies included Bombardier, CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Bell Helicopter. Participation in the event was essential to forge profitable long-term partnerships between Québec and key industry stakeholders from around the world.

$3.8 million investment
“Through our participation at Farnborough, we have expressed support for a $3.8 million investment project by German-based Liebherr-Aerospace, which will be building a landing gear assembly facility in Laval, together with a logistics centre. Liebherr-Aerospace will be creating a total of 35 high-level jobs. This major project will facilitate the launch of operations by another world-renowned integrative manufacturer in Québec,” said Mr. Gignac.

New initiatives
The Minister also took the opportunity to support two initiatives undertaken by Aéro Montréal, Québec’s aerospace cluster: the launch of MACH, a program aimed at optimizing Québec’s aerospace supply chain, and the signing of a cooperation agreement with North West Aerospace Alliance, the UK’s aerospace cluster.

Environmentally responsible aircraft
In order to remain a key player in the international arena, Québec will be capitalizing on the development of green products that offer improved performance, reduced noise levels and greater energy savings. Over the next four years, the Government of Québec and the private sector will be supporting a number of demonstration projects aimed at developing environmentally responsible aircraft as part of a broad-based initiative.

The following information provides an overview of Québec’s aerospace sector:

    • 215 SMEs
    • 40,200 jobs
    • Annual revenues of $12.4 billion (2009)
