Québec filmmakers at the Venice Film Festival

Québec filmmakers will be well represented at the 67th annual Venice Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica), which runs from September 1-11, 2010.

World premiere of Incendies

The new offering by Québec filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Incendies, will have its world premiere as part of Venice Days 2010 (Giornate degli Autori), a program running parallel to the Festival devoted to new creators. Inspired by Wajdi Mouawad’s play, the feature-length film stars the following actors:

  • Maxim Gaudette
  • Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin
  • Rémy Girard
  • Belgian/Moroccan actress Lubna Azabal

Although this is the first time Denis Villeneuve has taken part in the Venice Film Festival, a number of his works have already been selected for other major festivals:

  • Rewind/Fast Foward (Locarno)
  • Cosmos, 32nd Day of August on Earth and Next Floor (Cannes)
  • Maelström (Berlin)

Barney’s Version selected for the official competition

Richard J. Lewis’s feature-length film, based on the novel by the late Montreal-based writer Mordecai Richler, is in the running for the Festival’s official competition for the prestigious Lion d'Or, which is awarded to the best film. Barney’s Version was shot in Rome, Montreal and New York.

Barney’s Version was produced by Robert Lantos of Serendipity Point Films and co-produced by Québec producer Lyse Lafontaine (“Mommy Is at the Hairdresser’s”, “A Sunday in Kigali”, “Leolo”) and Fandango, an Italian production company. It stars renowned actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Minnie Driver. Montreal-based actresses Macha Grenon and Rachelle Lefèvre are also featured.
