Premier Jean Charest and the Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, are attending the 13th Francophonie Summit being held in Montreux, Switzerland, until October 24. Québec’s initiatives within this multilateral organization will focus on three challenges.

In the wake of the Québec City Summit, and in continuity with the priorities clearly expressed by the Government of Québec, these challenges are:

The promotion of French as an international language

The Premier met today with OIF Secretary-General Abdou Diouf. Among other issues, they talked about ways to promote the French language, a major challenge.

“We discussed the idea of a major event that could be held on a regular basis to foster reflection on the French language, showcase its influence, and encourage the expansion of its use. We have to promote French. We have to speak, sing, and do business in French. We have to be proud of it, a pride we must transmit to other members of the Francophonie and to the non-French-speaking countries,” said the Premier.

The fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity

The Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, was pleased that sustainable development and climate change would be debated and recalled that it was at Québec’s request that these topics were placed on the agenda of the Québec City Summit.

“We will have the opportunity to demonstrate our leadership in the fight against climate change. Our policies have been recognized as being among the best in the world,” said Minister Gagnon-Tremblay.

The commitment to Francophone solidarity with Haiti

The Premier and the Minister also announced their intention to present, on behalf of Québec, and jointly with Haiti, a resolution to mobilize the Francophonie in support of the reconstruction of Haiti. This resolution will be debated Sunday.
