Québec cinema in the limelight in Spain

Québec’s cinema showcase in Spain, the Mostra de Cinema del Québec, is back for a second edition in Barcelona from May 20 to 22.

Organized by the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and the Québec government office in Barcelona (BQB), this year’s Mostra will present five feature films:

  • Les signes vitaux, by Sophie Deraspe
  • Jo pour Jonathan, by Maxime Giroux
  • The Trotsky, by Jacob Tierney
  • Curling, by Denis Côté
  • À l’origine d’un cri, by Robin Aubert

Each feature film will be preceded by a short. One of them, Les journaux de Lipsett (Lipsett Diaries), has been singled out for a number of honours, including the special jury prize at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France, a special mention at Toronto’s Worldwide Short Film Festival, an audience award at the Melbourne International Animation Festival and a special mention at the International Animation Festival in Hiroshima. Sophie Deraspe, director of Les signes vitaux, will be part of the Mostra’s official opening and Maxime Giroux, director of Jo pour Jonathan, will attend the May 21 screening.

Coordinated by the Barcelona International Short Film Festival (MECAL), the Mostra is an opportunity for Spanish film buffs to discover or enhance their knowledge of Québec cinema. For the first time this year, the Mostra will also include screenings in Palma de Mallorca, on June 9.
