    Haiti: Multiservice help centres for Quebecers

    The Government of Québec is offering its services at three multiservice help centres reserved for Quebecers affected by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12. Multiservice help centres can be reached every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1 888 YO HAITI (1 888 964-2484).

    A new strategy to boost Québec-U.S. relations

    The Government of Québec's U.S. Strategy was unveiled on January 14 by the Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, Pierre Arcand, with several members of the Cabinet in attendance. One of the strategy’s purposes is to position Québec favorably within the North American economic space.

    Light vehicle greenhouse gas emissions: California standards in force in Québec

    The Regulation respecting greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles, the standards of which are equivalent to those adopted in California, come into effect in mid-January. Québec thereby becomes the first Canadian province to apply North America’s strictest standards.

    The United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, located in Montréal, will oversee the worldwide biodiversity-protection awareness campaign deployed throughout the year.

    Reactions to the death of Philippe Séguin

    Premier Jean Charest and Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, wish to offer their condolences to the family of Philippe Séguin, first president of France’s General Accounting Office (Cour des Comptes), former speaker of the National Assembly and former French government minister, who passed away on January 7 in Paris.

    Climate Group leaders committed to reducing greenhouse gases

    Québec Premier Jean Charest took the floor during the Climate Leaders Summit convened by The Climate Group on December 15 in Copenhagen. The Summit was the largest meeting of heads of federated states and regions ever held during a Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP). The participants, who also included industry leaders, all agreed on the need to implement a global agreement on climate change.

    La Francophonie Day of Discovery in Tokyo

    Over 150 people, mostly university students, participated in the La Francophonie Day of Discovery at Waseda University in Tokyo on December 13. This was the first event organized by the Council for the promotion of the Francophonie in Japan, an initiative encouraged by the Québec Government Office in Tokyo earlier this year.
