    Participants at the sixth meeting of the joint Québec-Catalonia committee, held by videoconference on June 4, ratified a dozen cooperation projects that will be undertaken over the next two years. The relevant areas include culture, education and economics, together with new sectors such as youth initiatives, electoral processes and biotechnology.

    Inaugural Québec film festival in Barcelona

    From May 21-23, the Catalan capital will be hosting a showcase for talented young Québec filmmakers during the inaugural version of Mostra de Cinema de Québec de Barcelona, a new contemporary Québec cinema festival. A selection of feature-length and short films will be shown at two key venues in the city, Verdi Park Cinema and the French Institute of Barcelona (IFB).

    The Québec government office in Barcelona (BQB) has launched an educational kit for teachers and their students in Catalonia. Thanks to this pilot-project promotional tool, elementary and secondary school students enrolled in French courses can find out about Québec in a fun, instructive way.

    Québec puppeteers win fans in Catalonian capital

    Québec puppeteers’ creativity and know-how were in the spotlight on March 25 in Barcelona. The exhibition Une Fenêtre ouverte sur les marionnettes du Québec “(“An open window on Québec puppets”), prepared by the Association québécoise des marionnettistes (AQM), opened the premiere edition of the Títelles Objetes Teatre (T•O•T) festival in the Catalonian capital. The premiere edition of the festival drew thousands of visitors of all ages.

    Québec authors visit Spain

    Spain welcomed several well-known Québec authors in November. The writers were in the country to take part in activities supported by the Québec Government office in Barcelona. An initial lecture tour organized by the International Association of Québec Studies (AIEQ) was devoted to authors Neil Bissoondath and Pierre Szalowski. Another event, flowing from an exchange between the Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) and the Sala Beckett (Beckett theatre) in Barcelona, focused on playwrights Evelyne de la Chenelière, Catherine Léger and Larry Tremblay.

    Québec to pull strings in Tolosa

    Québec puppeteers will be front and centre at this year’s Titirijai Festival (International Puppet Festival) in Tolosa, Spain, to be held from November 28 to December 6. The 27th edition of the festival will be the inaugural event for Tolosa’s brand-new TO.PIC complex, one of the world’s largest puppet arts centres. Québec’s high-profile participation in the festival will wrap up a series of activities held to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Québec government office in Barcelona.

    Québec-Catalonia: Lights! Camera! Action!

    A memorandum of understanding signed in Montréal between INIS (Québec’s National Institute of Image and Sound) and ESCAC (Catalonia’s School of Advanced Film and Audiovisual Studies) opens a new chapter in cultural cooperation between Québec and Catalonia. Through the agreement, the institutions seek primarily to stimulate exchanges among professors and provide an opportunity for students from Catalonia and Québec to carry out a project in conjunction with the Portraits croisés international exchange program.

    Pierre Arcand completes a successful trip to Spain

    Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, delivered a positive report on his official visit to Spain (September 7-11), which included meetings with some 15 high-level political figures and visits to a variety of industrial and cultural centres. He also announced four new cooperation projects during his trip.
