    Promotion of Québec culture in New York City: a success

    Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, is extremely pleased with her recent mission to New York City. During her visit from January 6 to 8, she announced the names of the four artists who will benefit from an agreement between the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the New York State Council on the Arts to engage in creative residencies and periods of artistic renewal in New York State.

    New York Governor in favour of an “energy highway” with Québec

    On January 4, the Governor of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo, expressed his desire to build an “energy highway” linking Québec’s power generation installations with consumer markets in Downstate New York, including New York City. The Governor delivered this message in the traditional State of the State address in Albany, the state capital, before assembled legislators and members of the public.

    MRI backs Québec-Japan journalism grant

    Marie-Soleil Desautels, recipient of the 2011 Québec-Japan journalism grant, has returned from a stay in Japan, where she prepared a series of articles. At the end of ten days devoted to a story on geothermal power — at a time when Japan is rethinking its energy policy and could shift to non-nuclear sources of power — she decided to extend her stay in order to cover the Tohoku region, devastated by last year’s earthquake and tsunami. She also delved into the status of women in Japan, focusing in particular on work-family balance.

    New prize for the best tour across Canada and the United States

    The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) has just announced that, beginning in 2012, it will award the Prix pour la meilleure tournée au Canada et aux États-Unis to an organization that stood out by the exceptional quality of a tour across Canada or the United States or both. This new biennial prize, which comes with a $10,000 cheque, will be presented at the Bourse RIDEAU event in February 2012.

    Plan Nord: Course on Québec at Meiji University in Japan

    Québec Delegate General in Tokyo Claude-Yves Charron gave a conference in December on the Plan Nord for the “Québec aujourd’hui” course, which is on the curriculum of the School of Political Science and Economics of Meiji University in Japan in partnership with the Association japonaise des études québécoises (AJEQ).

    Transportation agreement with Mexico

    The Québec ground transportation cluster, in conjunction with the Québec Government Office in Mexico City, has just announced that a cooperation agreement has been signed with the Asociacion nacional de productores de autobuses, camiones y tractocamiones (ANPACT) from Mexico. It was signed in the presence of Christiane Pelchat, Québec’s Delegate General in Mexico City, Denis Robillard, Chief Executive Officer of the Québec ground transportation cluster, and Carlos García Fernández, President of ANPACT.

    TOHU presents its urban development model in São Paulo

    The Social Service of Commerce in São Paulo (SESCSP) recently organized an international seminar on culture and urban transformation attended by international players from the cultural sector. Discussions focused on the implementation of cultural projects as they relate to social, economic and urban transformations in cities. Québec was represented by TOHU, a non-profit organization created at the initiative of En Piste (the circus arts national network), the National Circus School and Cirque du Soleil.

    Québec-Shandong relations make economic news in China

    Québec-Shandong relations were a focal point of China’s economic news this week. The new Director of the Québec Government Office in Beijing, Daniel Dignard, alongside the Governor of Shandong, Jiang Daming, made an economic news announcement concerning Shandong Publication and Press Co. Ltd (SPPC) and Tembec. Governor Daming officially announced the launch of the SPPC, a new company that now comprises all of Shandong’s paper conversion and printing industry. The strategy is intended to boost Shandong Province’s leadership role and strengthen the current partnership with the Québec-based company Tembec.
