Montréal Collections - Spotlight on Québec fashion in Atlanta
Québec City, April 16, 2007 – Three Québec designers and 20-odd Québec ready-to-wear manufacturers presented their creations yesterday during an eye-catching fashion show held in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of an event dubbed Montréal Collections.
Close to 300 buyers from specialized boutiques and agents from across the United States attended the show, which also featured daredevil circus acts by Cirque Éloize. The activity was a joint initiative of the Ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation (MDEIE) and the Délégation du Québec à Atlanta (Québec government office in Atlanta). The City of Montréal's fashion and clothing commissioner, Diane Duhamel, gave the opening address for the event, which was attended by designers Yves Jean Lacasse, Marie Saint-Pierre and Andy Thê Anh, along with a number of high-profile representatives of the Québec clothing industry.
Montréal Collections is a project deployed by the Government of Québec in order to promote Montréal as an international fashion centre. Fashion shows and presentations, backed up by snappy promotional documents, are part of the strategic efforts devoted by Québec government offices south of the border. The Montréal fashion industry holds a number of trump cards. Among other things, it stands out thanks to the originality of its creators, the high quality of its clothing at competitive prices, and the ability of Montréal companies to adapt to market imperatives. Montréal is North America's second-largest clothing production centre, outranked only by Los Angeles. Since 2006, Montréal has also been singled out as a UNESCO City of Design.
Growing Québec presence in southeastern U.S.
Québec has been present in Atlanta since 1978 in order to promote its interests in the southeastern United States. In line with its International Policy, adopted in 2006, the government recently upgraded its Atlanta office to delegation status. The office's mission is to bolster Québec's economic, political and institutional relations in the region. The southeastern U.S. is enjoying impressive economic and demographic growth, and a number of states in the region offer interesting development opportunities for Québec exporters.
