Latin America and the Antilles
List of projects
Latin America and the Antilles include some 50 states and territories with a combined population of more than 637 million people. These highly diverse regions include low-income countries as well as emerging economic powers.
In recent decades, these regions have made economic progress. However, they also have high levels of income disparity between the richest and the poorest populations. This large wealth gap poses a major obstacle to progress, particularly in terms of human development. Women, indigenous peoples and people of African descent are the three groups most affected by income inequality.
Québec helps support the most disadvantaged populations in Latin America and the Antilles because:
- It is part of the Americas
- It has cultural and economic ties to these regions.
Since its international solidarity programs were created in 1995, Québec has undertaken initiatives in 19 countries in Latin America and the Antilles, primarily in the following countries:
- $50 million in financial commitments
- 3,062 Quebecers have completed internships in Latin America and the Antilles
- 189 residents of Latin America and the Antilles have completed reciprocal internships in Québec
The main beneficiary countries are (PQDI and QWB combined):
- Haiti: $18.6 million
- Peru: $6.5 million
- Nicaragua: $3.7 million
- Bolivia: $4.7 million
Haiti is the most important beneficiary country in terms of the Government of Québec's international solidarity activities.
As the only country in the Americas to appear on the UN's list of the least developed countries, Haiti has received ongoing development assistance from Québec for several years. Historically, Québec has enjoyed very close ties with Haiti, due in particular to the following factors:
- Shared common language
- Geographic proximity
- Québec is home to a large Haitian community.
