Planet Québec at SXSW: A huge success

Planet Québec at SXSW is a joint initiative by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications (MCC) and the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur (MRIFCE).

This year’s edition of the Planet Québec showcase at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, held from March 7 to 15, was another resounding success. Hundreds of visitors stopped by the Québec booth to find out more about business opportunities and Québec’s strategic position as a hub of innovation in the fields of interactive media, cinema and music.

Québec drew people’s attention in the exhibition hall thanks to the high-profile presence of the companies Brandicted, Float4 and Kiwili.

According to Jonathan Stoikovitch, CEO of Brandicted, his firm’s presence at SXSW to launch its website and speak with potential business partners was a unique opportunity for a business of this type. He said that Brandicted is already feeling the impact of its participation and is planning to be back again next year.

Quebecers win three awards

Québec expertise and talent were singled out for special recognition during the fourth edition of Planet Québec at SXSW.

Synbiota took home the SXSW® Accelerator competition’s top prize in the Innovative World Technologies category, for its unique open Web collaborative platform, which allows the global scientific community to solve highly complex problems using genetic engineering techniques.

Vincent Morisset, director and founder of AATOAA Studio, won the SXSW Interactive Award in the Music category for his video clip Just a Reflektor, created for the Montréal-based group Arcade Fire. In 2012, Morisset received the SXSW Interactive Award in the Art category for his project BLA BLA, a film for computer.

Last but not least, filmmaker and actress Monia Chokri won the SXSW Short Film Jury Award for her narrative short Quelqu’un d’extraordinaire. Her film was chosen from over 2,000 entries in this category.
